William "Max" McDonald

–

New Bern, North Carolina

William James McDonald, known affectionately as Max, was born on August 28, 1938, in New York, NY. He passed away on February 1, 2026, leaving behind a treasure trove of memories in New Bern, North Carolina where he resided.

Max was a man of many talents and passions. A dedicated serviceman, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1964, achieving the rank of Corporal. His commitment to service didn't end there. He made a 33-year career as a Field Service Representative with Northrup Grumman, working for most of this time at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station. He supported the Marine Corps all over the world, in various theaters where they were engaged, including during Operation Desert Storm, among others. His work ethic and dedication were truly remarkable, as evidenced in the creation of an award named in his honor which is presented to an outstanding non-commissioned officer in recognition of exceptional leadership, maintenance excellence, and dedication to aviation maintenance and quality assurance. As Leonardo da Vinci said, "It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things." Max was a man who happened to things with passion, precision, and purpose.

When he wasn't working, Max had a knack for tinkering. He loved to take things apart, fix them, and put them back together. His hands were rarely still, and he had an amazing ability to breathe new life into things that others might have discarded. He was also a captivating storyteller who could draw in listeners and entertain folks with his tales. His stories, much like his life, were filled with adventure, humor, and an appreciation for the beauty of everyday moments.

In retirement, Max enjoyed traveling with his wife, Janet, and "piddling" around the house, always looking for something to work on, fix, or improve. Having been born and raised in the hustle and bustle of the Bronx, New York, he grew to love the quiet, simple pleasures of country life. Above all, Max believed in the importance of making memories with his family. He often said, "We're just here to make memories." This belief guided his life and shaped the way he interacted with those he loved.

He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Janet, and his children, Mike McDonald (Holly), Andy McDonald, Lindsay Vicencio (Nick) who will forever cherish the memories they made with him. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Max was preceded in death by his brother, Richie McDonald, and his sister, Rose D’Angelo.

The family will gather privately to celebrate Max's remarkable life.

In lieu of flowers, Max's family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Tunnel to Towers charity (www.t2t.org).

He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and a life well-lived. As we remember Max, let's honor his belief in the power of making memories by spending time with our loved ones and cherishing those moments. We invite you to share your memories and upload photos of Max to his memorial page, celebrating his life and the memories you shared together.
