New Bern, North Carolina
With hearts full of fond memories, we share the passing of Robert Michael Whitehurst, or as most affectionately knew him, Bob. Born on March 13, 1948, in Norfolk, VA, Robert gracefully embarked on his final journey on September 4, 2026. Bob, or "Bubba" to his siblings, was the epitome of thoughtfulness, a man of quiet strength who gave generously of his time and heart to those he cherished.
After growing up in Bridgeton, not far from the Neuse River, Bob's adventurous spirit led him to join the Air Force, stationed in Greece, where he attained the rank of Sgt. before an honorable discharge. His return to his roots in New Bern, North Carolina, saw him start a fulfilling career with Carolina Telephone, where he served diligently as an Installer for 40 years before his retirement. Bob was not just a loving brother and a steadfast friend, but also an understanding soul who never hesitated to lend a helping hand. His generosity was legendary among his family and friends, who would joke that they didn't think he ever said 'no' to anyone.
Bob's love for life was infectious. His passion for dance was only rivaled by his love for sailing on his little sailboat. He enjoyed living on the river, not far from his childhood home, a nod to the nostalgic summer days he spent swimming and diving off the train trestle with his siblings.
He is survived by his sisters, Debora Whitehurst and Donna Whitehurst; his brother, Donald Whitehurst; and Pat and Matt Hagen, who were like sons to him. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Nola Whitehurst, and a sister, Cathlene Morgan.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Greenleaf Memorial Park Lakeside Chapel.
In honor of Robert's life, we invite you to share your memories and photos of him on his memorial page. Let's remember him as he was – thoughtful, generous, and loving – and celebrate the remarkable life he led and the profound impact he had on all of us.
