Monica Rose Nees

–

New Bern, North Carolina

Monica Rose Nees, 92, died on September 18, 2026, at Pruitt Health-Neuse in New Bern, North Carolina. She was born on June 23, 1934, in Harvey, Illinois, to Francis J. Nees and Cecilia Catherine Nees. Monica lived a remarkable life filled with intellectual curiosity, independence, and a wonderful appreciation of nature. She was brilliant, accomplished and witty. She earned her PhD in organic chemistry and embarked on a successful career as an organic chemist, researcher, lecturer and educator. Later in her career, Monica worked with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

To this day, Monica was most proud of one of her first remarkable accomplishments. In the early 1950s, she was hired as the first woman sports reporter for her local newspaper, the Harvey Tribune. At that time, women sports reporters were virtually nonexistent! From early on, Monica was a sports aficionado. Her love of the Chicago Cubs remained with her all of her life. She was affectionately nicknamed "Cubs Nees" by her friends, colleagues and family.

Monica intensely enjoyed bird watching, nature and photography. She spent countless hours observing and photographing birds and loved sharing her knowledge with community bird watching groups. She treasured her time at the renowned Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine. Her passion for birds and her ability to notice small details earned her the endearing nickname "The Great Orn." She also loved her dear cats Wolfie, Cooney, Maggie May and Benny who filled her life with joy and companionship.

Monica is survived by her sisters, Marcia C. Lichtenberger (Fred), Anelia M. Nees, and Dr. Susan M. Radtke (Michael); and was preceded in death by her brother, Paul F. Nees. She is the beloved aunt of ten nieces and nephews and sixteen great nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her intelligence, wit, determination, curiosity and distinctive spirit. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, colleagues, students and all who knew her.

A private memorial service for immediate family will be arranged at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Audubon Society.

Bennett Funeral & Cremation Care is honored to serve the family and friends of Monica Rose Nees.
