Miriam Wood

Miriam Turner Wood was born September 10, 1933 in Magnolia, North Carolina. That day signifies the beginning of a 93-year journey of faith, family and friends.

Miriam was preceded in passing by her husband OK Wood. She survived by her children Paul Kenan Wood and Susan Wood Heiman (Michael), her three grandchildren Peter Heiman III (Kate), Taylor Heiman (Kristine), and Jordan Wood (Summer) and her four great-grandchildren Caroline, Michael, Charlotte and Parker.

Her two greatest joys were her family and the Lord. She was dedicated to both. She became a member of First Baptist Church New Bern, North Carolina in 1979 where she was very active and made many friends. Miriam served the Lord through her kindness to all. One of her favorite ways to serve was as a chaperone for the youth trips. Additionally, Miriam was a faithful member of the Jane Marshall Jenkins Sunday School Class where she served as president and corresponding secretary.

Though her career took many forms, the most influential was her work with New Bern City and Craven County Schools. Miriam worked at New Bern High School (old and new) for 30+ years. While at NBHS she touched many lives in her bookkeeper role. She lived Galatians 5: 22-23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Through her example in her dealing with staff and students she exhibited Christ’s love for all.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 12, 2026 at First Baptist Church, 239 Middle Street, New Bern, NC 28560. The family will receive friends just prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service hour.

Though she will be dearly missed, we should all celebrate her life by passing on her love and faith to someone in need. With that spirit of giving in mind, Miriam and her family ask that in lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to the Pastoral Benevolence account of First Baptist Church New Bern, North Carolina.
