Maxine Byars

–

New Bern, North Carolina

Maxine E. Byars, age 84, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026. She was born on June 6, 1941, in Cook County, Illinois, where she was raised and developed the nurturing spirit that would define her life.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Elizabeth Raschke, and her sisters, Maryann Kehn and Elberta Raschke.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Phyllis Zwiers (Bob) and Naomi Childers (Mark); her grandchildren, Felicia Teasley, Kristyanne Dumire, Brittany Dumire, and Jacquelyn Infantino; seven great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; along with many extended family members and loved ones.

Maxine was a strong and devoted woman who worked tirelessly throughout her life to provide for her family. With the support of her loved ones, she raised her children with care and determination, always putting others before herself. Her nurturing nature remained evident even in her final days, as she continually sought ways to help those around her.

Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She played an instrumental role in raising them, dedicating her time, love, and steady presence so they would always feel supported. Affectionately known as “Pizza Grandma,” she created countless memories filled with laughter, comfort, and unconditional love.

Maxine found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. She loved reading, old western movies, crossword puzzles, comic books, and classic game shows such as Press Your Luck, The Price is Right, and Hollywood Squares. She enjoyed pizza and a cold beer, and she treasured evenings spent playing bingo, bowling, and gathering with friends at Mooseheart Lodge.

In later years, Maxine especially cherished trips to Carolina Beach. Whether attending boardwalk bingo, enjoying outdoor concerts, or sitting peacefully at the end of a public beach access with a good book, the ocean brought her great comfort.

A service to remember and celebrate Maxine's life will be 2 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026 at Highland Park Christian Church, 905 Highland Avenue, Trent Woods, NC 28562.

Remembered for her forgiving heart, resilience, and unwavering devotion to her family, Maxine leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and selflessness that will continue to guide those who knew her.
