Mary Toler

Mary Elizabeth Norris Toler was born on September 8, 1938, and passed away on September 11, 2026, at the age of 88. Mary was raised in the Rhems community as one of 10 children.

Mary Elizabeth was a caring woman of true kindness. She is survived by her son, Eugene Toler, Sr.; daughter, Mary Toler Haddock (Timmy); son, John Toler; and daughter, Elizabeth Hartley (David). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Lisa Van Hoever (Scott), Andrea Joyner (Brandon), and Lauren Richie (Jason); and her great-grandchildren, Hannah Joyner, Lochlan Van Hoever, and Amoky Van Hoever.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherwood B. Norris, Sr., and Laura Josephine Shute Norris; and her siblings, Shirley Straker, Sherwood “Butler” Norris, Jr., Sarah Norris Cahoon, William “Billy” Norris, Harvey “Shute” Norris, George David Norris, Edward Lee Norris, Robert “Bobby” Norris, and Donald Ray Norris.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Wood and the third-floor staff at CarolinaEast Medical Center for their compassionate care and assistance to their mother. They would also like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport for the care and comfort they provided to Mary and her family.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 808 George Street, New Bern, NC 28560.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport in Mary’s memory.
