New Bern, North Carolina
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Marvin Cleveland Mills, aged 92, of New Bern, North Carolina. Marvin, a dedicated, generous, supportive, and loving man, was called to his eternal resting place on June 17, 2025. Born on January 12, 1933, in Pitt County, Marvin spent his early life in the Ernul and Bridgeton communities. The son of sharecroppers, William Fred and Mettie Ella Wiley Mills, Marvin's journey was one of resilience and determination. His humble beginnings shaped him into a man of strength and tenacity, traits he carried with him throughout his life.
Marvin was a long-time member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he served with love and devotion. His faith was his guiding light, as reflected in the verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). Marvin's life was a testament to this scripture, as he continuously stepped up to life's challenges, emboldening others with his unwavering spirit. After serving in the Army National Guard, Marvin took flight lessons though the GI bill and later worked for Piedmont Airlines for a few years. Marvin then discovered his passion for insurance brokerage, where he excelled as an Account Executive at Blue Cross / Blue Shield. His dedication earned him countless sales awards and trips, which he enjoyed with his late wife, Mary Jo. Together, they traveled the world, creating memories from Paris to Austria to Hawaii. After his retirement with Blue Cross, Marvin started his own business Mills Consulting.
Despite his professional success, what mattered most to Marvin was family. He was a loving father to his children, Pamela Mills Hoke (John), Jeffrey Cleveland Mills, and Wendy Mills Wagner (Richard); a wonderful grandfather to his grandchildren, Matthew Wagner and Kaylee Wagner and cherished time spent with his family. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends whom he loved dearly. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 68 years, Mary Jo; and all of his siblings, Gladys Mills, Myrtle Ipock, Mildred Vendrix, Lillian Anspach, Evelyn Taylor, Fred Mills, and Ethel Kolb.
Marvin's home on Baird's Creek in Pamlico County was a sanctuary of peace and serenity, where many happy moments were spent on the water, fishing, crabbing, and boating. His generosity and supportive nature made everyone in his presence feel loved and appreciated. The highlight of his life was ensuring the happiness of his family, a legacy that will continue to live on.
A celebration of Marvin's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at Tabernacle Baptist Church with Pastor Scott Gleason officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the nurses and caregivers at Homeplace of New Bern, Gentiva Hospice, as well as Dr. Matt Smith and his staff for the excellent care provided to Marvin during his last days.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be given to Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund in memory of Marvin.
In honor of Marvin Mills, we encourage you to leave memories and upload photos to the memorial page. Each memory shared will serve as a reminder of Marvin's love and dedication to his family and his unwavering commitment to his faith and career. We will forever cherish our time with Marvin, a truly remarkable man who touched our lives in innumerable ways.
