New Bern, North Carolina
Marcus Frederick Cameron, age 74, died peacefully at his home in New Bern on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. His life was one of service to community, joy in good music, and of absolute love and adoration for his wife Temple.
Marcus was a sociable presence in his neighborhood near the Neuse River, taking walks with the family’s three equally social dachshunds. He never knew a stranger and would strike up conversations with just about anyone. Marcus was quick to share a funny story—he seemed to have an infinite number—and always delivered a punchline with precision. He was kind-hearted and was especially sensitive to people who were suffering through tough times.
Born January 18, 1952 in Ft. Bragg, NC, Marcus was the son of Marcus and Clara Wilson Cameron. He was raised in Sanford, NC and grew up in his father’s pharmacy, Jonesboro’s Lee Drug Store, counting pills at his daddy’s knee. He was a 1970 graduate of Lee County High School.
A proud 1975 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Pharmacy, Marcus’s passion for Carolina basketball, especially the Dean Smith years, was deep and loyal. Marcus and Temple attended many football and basketball games in Chapel Hill in support of the Tar Heels.
After earning his Pharmacy degree from UNC, Marcus started his career with a small, independent drug store in Walnut Cove, NC. He subsequently worked at Kerr Drugs in Winston-Salem, NC, Rite-Aid and Eckerd’s in Cary, NC, and CVS in Wilmington, NC. He retired from CVS after 42 years as a pharmacist. Throughout his career, he helped countless people who were in pain or scared. He was a trusted advisor for families who needed him.
In 1990, Marcus made his home in Durham. Marcus and Temple Edwards met through an ad in a Durham newspaper in 1994. They married on September 30, 1995 in Clinton, NC, and spent their 30-year marriage celebrating life to the fullest. They told each other “I love you” several times every day, an example they would advise us all to follow.
Marcus and Temple resided in Durham for many years before moving to Wilmington, NC, and to New Bern in December 2019. In New Bern, they enjoyed trying new restaurants and attending community events as well as attending too many concerts to name.
Marcus is survived by his wife Temple, his siblings, Terri Cameron Capps of Ebony, VA; Sherri Cameron Hubbell and husband Carl of Wilmington, NC; David Gordon Cameron of Charlotte, NC; and Grant Sterling Cameron and wife Kendall of Davidson, NC; nephews, Jonathon Clingman Capps of Ebony, NC and Austin Cameron Hubbell of Wilmington, NC; and numerous cousins and their families.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.
