John Ralph Johnson, Jr., a lifelong golfer, teacher, mentor, and friend, passed away on January 4, 2026. He was born on July 14, 1945, in Dunn, North Carolina, to Dr. Ralph Johnson and Leona Johnson. From a young age, Ralph was known as a mischievous spirit with an undeniable passion for the game of golf—a passion that would shape his life and touch the lives of countless others. Ralph turned professional in 1965, beginning his career at Surf Club and later that year serving as Assistant Professional at Highland Country Club in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he formed a lifelong friendship with Sonny Ridenhour. In 1966, he became a member of the PGA and was named Head Professional at Greenhill Country Club in Louisburg, North Carolina, marking the beginning of a long and respected professional journey. He went on to serve at Willow Creek Country Club in High Point, North Carolina, before becoming Head Professional at Emerywood Country Club, also in High Point, during which time his sons were born. In the early 1970s, Ralph served multiple stints as Head Professional during the construction and development of Bald Head Island, navigating changing times while helping shape a new golfing destination. Ralph later worked as Assistant Professional at MacGregor Downs in Cary, North Carolina, with close friend Roger Watson, followed by a role as Head Professional at Oak Island Golf Club. He eventually reunited with Sonny Ridenhour at Pine Tree Golf Club in Kernersville, North Carolina, serving as his assistant and continuing a friendship that deeply influenced his life and career. In 1976, Ralph entered what would become one of the most meaningful chapters of his life when he purchased Arrowhead Golf Course in Mebane, North Carolina, alongside Ridenhour. Arrowhead was far more than a business—it was a gathering place and a community. People from all walks of life came not only to play golf but to share fellowship, stories, and friendship. Ralph owned and operated Arrowhead from 1976 to 2003, raising his sons there, teaching them the game, and instilling in them his love for golf, people, and hard work. Both sons followed in his footsteps, shaped by the lessons learned on those fairways. In 1992, Ralph moved to Atlantic Beach, where he believed retirement awaited. Instead, he discovered a new passion—fast boats and offshore racing. He worked for a time with HMY Yacht Sales alongside Jim Bailey and formed a close friendship with David Knight that spanned more than 30 years. Along with Roger Ausley, they owned a race boat and competed in offshore racing, becoming World Champions in their first year in 1999. Professionally, Ralph continued to leave his mark on the game. In 1997, he achieved a career highlight by winning a Senior Tour event, a proud moment reflecting decades of dedication. From 2003 to 2011, he owned and operated Shamrock Golf Course in Burlington, North Carolina, alongside his son Sonny, and his black lab Trudee; the head greeter and biscuit eater. Throughout his life, two individuals had the greatest professional influence on Ralph: L.B. Floyd and his best friend, Sonny Ridenhour. While Ralph cherished friendships formed across many courses, Arrowhead Golf Course remained closest to his heart. Mention its name, and stories would inevitably follow. Ralph’s love for golf extended well beyond competition. He shared the game first with his sister, then with his sons, and ultimately with countless students and friends. He believed that golf lessons were often life lessons and gave both freely. He taught until the very end—on the driving range, over the phone, and even in waiting rooms—always eager to help someone improve. In 2015, Ralph moved to New Bern, North Carolina, where he spent his final years surrounded by family, memories, and enduring friendships. Those who knew Ralph carry their own stories—moments of laughter, wisdom, and guidance shaped by his generosity, passion, and unmistakable presence. Many were blessed to witness his journey and learn from him. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Ralph and Leona Johnson, and his brother, Marvin Johnson. He is survived by his beloved wife, Janice, and his cherished puppies, Hannah and Charlee; his children Sonny Johnson (Lynn), Robert Johnson (Stacey), Jerad Vasil, and Jamee Rose (Becky); his sister Phoebe Briley (Jim); niece Phoebe Leona Briley; nephews Drake and Spencer Johnson and their mother Judy Johnson; grandchildren Loften Johnson (Caroline), Eddie Johnson, Danielle Johnson, Drew Johnson, Aubree Vasil, and Foxx Vasil; and great-granddaughter Addie Rae Johnson. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Craven County Hospice and to all the nurses and staff for their kindness, compassion, and comfort during Ralph’s final days.
