Joan Umstead

–

New Bern, North Carolina

On April 10, 2024, Joan Arkie Tucker Umstead, now calls Heaven her home. Joan and her twin, June, were born on August 26, 1934 to Joseph and Arkie Tucker in Sligo, NC. She loved to share the many memories of growing up on a farm. She had a full childhood growing up with four siblings, grandparents, and many animals.

Joan worked at New Bern Ear, Nose, and Throat, but her main job was being a mother to four children. She knew what sorrow was, losing two children within ten months apart. April 10th was a glorious day, for she was reunited with them both. Whenever Joan did something, she did it well. She was an avid Bridge player, knitted beautiful clothes, and enjoyed golf.

She was a member of the New Bern Church of God, where she served in many areas. She loved the Lord and her church family who called and visited when she was unable to attend.

Joan was known for her love of family, her laughter, and her wealth of knowledge. Although we know she is in a better place, she will be missed by all.

She is survived by her children, Kim Ipock (Donald) and Felicia Newman; sister, Jean Oren; five grandchildren, Melissa and Jonathan Ipock, Stephanie and Jordan Newman, and Michael Umstead; and great grandchild, Caden Moffett.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Buddy and Billy Tucker; twin sister, June Sowell; two children, Wayne and Janice Umstead.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Cardinal Hospice and Riverpoint Crest for their compassion and care, and a very special thanks to Rhonda who went over and beyond in caring for Joan. Not only did she provide quality care, she became a friend who always put a smile on her face.

At Joan's request there will not be a service. Instead, her family will hold a private memorial to celebrate and honor her life.

One of Joan's favorite scripture verses, Philippians 1:21, "For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain," sums up her life and faith and her family is grateful to know that she is now in her Heavenly Home with her Savior.
