James "Smitty" Smith Obituary (1964 - 2024) - Vanceborto, North Carolina

On September 4, 2024, we said a heartfelt farewell to the world's most thoughtful angler, James Victor Smith II, known affectionately by many as "Smitty". Born on November 30, 1964, in North Carolina, he was a man who was generous with his time, funny in his spirit, and loving in his heart. Smitty was a man who loved the simple pleasures in life, finding joy in the flick of a fishing line, the shuffle of a card deck, and the warm glow of a family gathering. He spent many cherished years at Moen, where he demonstrated an unyielding dedication and work ethic, working in several capacities, including on the production line, as a materials handler, and then forklift operator. His hard work was recognized through various positions he held during his 28-year tenure. His passion for fishing was not just a hobby, but a lifestyle, leading him to become a valued member of several Bass Fishing Organizations. As the famous quote by Henry Thoreau goes, "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after," Smitty knew it was the camaraderie and peaceful solitude that truly hooked him. Smitty is survived by his wife Paula Smith, his daughter Victoria Smith, step-daughters Shanna Broadway (William) and Priscilla Price (Shannon), and his siblings Mary Lou and Earnest Wayne Smith. He leaves a legacy of love in his grandchildren, Paisley Smith, Greyson Price, Zane Broadway, and Harlee Broadway, nieces Lacrisha Jones (Richard) and April Smith, as well as his best friend and fishing buddy, Marty Griekspoor. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Betty Smith, and his brother Richard Smith. His family was his guiding star, his safe haven, and the heart of all his stories. A celebration of Smitty's life will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Oak Grove Church, 1700 Wilmar Road, Vancboro, NC. Smitty's life was a testament to the power of laughter, the beauty of generosity, and the enduring strength of a loving heart.
