Gerald DeCamp

–

New Bern, North Carolina

Gerald Lee DeCamp, affectionately known by many as "Jerry," was born on the 4th of May, 1951, in New Bern, North Carolina. He was a beacon of light, joy, and laughter to all who knew him. Jerry was a funny soul, always sparking joy with his infectious humor that could light up even the darkest of rooms. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and following his military service, he embarked on a career in law enforcement, where he served with the Craven County Sheriff's Department until his retirement in 2009. Jerry's generosity was evident throughout his 30-year service, where he climbed the ranks to Lieutenant, always putting the needs of others before his own.

Over the years, Jerry's loving nature was best depicted in his care for his family, to whom he was devoted. He was a dedicated husband to Bonnie, his beloved wife. The foundation of their love was their shared laughter, their mutual respect, and their unwavering support for each other. Gerald was also known for his adventurous spirit, often seen with a fishing rod in his hand, casting lines into the serene waters of his native New Bern, North Carolina. His adventurous nature was an embodiment of the scripture, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13).

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Gladys DeCamp; brother, Eddie DeCamp; and sister, Sandra Pierce. He leaves behind a loving wife, Bonnie; two stepchildren, Wesley Ray Griffin, Jr. and Leslie Rae York; a special granddaughter, Hollie Grace York; cousin, Mickey Tillman and family; as well as a community that will forever remember his generous spirit, funny anecdotes, and loving nature. His life was a testament to the verse, "A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed" (Proverbs 11:25).

Jerry will be laid to rest at Greenleaf Memorial Park in a private service.

The family would like to thank Mary, Nora, Joy, Angel, and the rest of the staff of Craven County Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Jerry's name to Craven County Hospice.

As we remember Jerry, may his funny, loving, adventurous, and generous spirit live on in all of us.

Bennett Funeral & Cremation Care is honored to serve the family and friends of Jerry DeCamp.
