Fred Mills, Jr., a dedicated man of many talents, slipped peacefully from this world on December 10, 2024. Born on September 9, 1929, to the late William and Mettie Mills, Fred came into this life in the humble town of Ayden, North Carolina. His journey took him from being the son of a tenant farmer to serving in the Army Air Force post-World War II, and later to becoming the successful owner and operator of Mills Radio and TV in New Bern for more than 50 years.
Fred often introduced himself with the unique saying, "My name is Charlie Brown, I just got to town, and I don’t mess around." He was a self-taught television and electronics repairman with a unique gift for problem-solving. His ingenuity and dedication to his craft were as evident in his work as they were in his personal life. When he wasn't selling and repairing television sets or helping his customers, Fred could be found dancing, boating, fishing, or tending to his beloved garden. A member of the American Legion, his dedication extended to his community as well.
As a Christian, Fred's faith guided him throughout his life. His spiritual journey began at Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church and in recent years found him at St. Mary's Free Will Baptist Church. His love for his wife, Dottie, was profound, and he cherished every moment spent with her. Alongside Dottie, Fred's other great love was his garden. As stated in the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted."
Fred is survived by his children, Patricia Heatley, Greg Mills (Cynthia), Lynn Dixon (Jerry), his brother Marvin Mills, his grandchildren Jeff Dixon, Melissa Smith (Adam), Josh Mills, and his great-grandchildren Samantha Smith and Riley Dixon.
Fred's life will be celebrated on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 3:00 pm at Greenleaf Memorial Park Lakeside Chapel, 900 River Road, New Bern, North Carolina with his son, Pastor Greg Mills officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the White Hill Free Will Baptist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 519, Aurora, NC 27806.
His enduring spirit and dedicated service to his community will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. Friends are invited to share condolences and memories on the website below.
