Eugene Whitley

–

New Bern, North Carolina

Eugene Parrott Whitley, affectionately known as “Pappy” to his grandchildren, was a beacon of strength, intelligence, and support to all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. Born on January 29, 1946, in Kinston, NC, Eugene was a man of substance, who lived a life filled with passion and purpose. He had a love for life that was contagious and a spirit that was unbreakable. His compassionate heart and his fierce loyalty to his loved ones made him a remarkable man.

Eugene spent his younger years in the small town of Dover, graduating from Southwood High School in Kinston in 1964. He exhibited his commitment to his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving honorably during the Vietnam War for three years. Following his service, Eugene embarked on a successful career in the textile industry, proving his smart and strategic mind. His journey began as an industrial engineer and culminated in the ownership of his own apparel manufacturing business, “Whitley Apparel” in Dover. Eugene's unmatched business acumen, combined with his outgoing personality and capacity to make friends easily, made him a respected figure in the industry.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Eugene was a devoted member of St. Paul Catholic Church and contributed significantly to the Knights of Columbus. His love for golf and the great outdoors formed an important part of his life, with a special fondness for cutting grass. He was stoic, unafraid to share his opinions, but his kindness and supportive nature were undeniable.

Eugene is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Janice Ham Whitley; Daughter, Kelley Whitley Brown; Grandchildren, Joshua Parrott Brown (Tatianne), Nicholas James Brown (Elisabeth), Christopher Whitley Brown (Katherine), Abigail Raven Brown; great granddaughter, Luciana “Lucy” Elora Brown; Brother, Mike Whitley (Gloria); his beloved cats, Titus, Abby, Tigger, Raven, and Salem. He is preceded in death by his parents, “P.G.” and Jean Whitley.
