Ed Weigl Obituary (1945 - 2025) - New Bern, North Carolina

Edward D. “Ed” Weigl, a devoted public servant and lifelong advocate for his community, passed away in the early hours of Friday, May 2, 2025. He was 79 years old. Born in Queens, NY, Ed was the only child of Edward and Lorraine Weigl. He spent most of his life in New Bern, NC, where he graduated from New Bern High School in 1964. From 1965 to 1969, Ed proudly served in the United States Coast Guard, achieving the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. His military service instilled in him a deep sense of duty and sparked a lifelong commitment to public service. After returning home, Ed graduated from Craven Community College and began his distinguished career with the Craven County Sheriff’s Office. Rising through the ranks to Captain before retiring in 2005, Ed was known for his calm leadership, steady presence, and unwavering dedication to law enforcement and the people he served. His deep love for his community extended beyond law enforcement and into the fire service, where he followed in his father’s footsteps of selfless service. He volunteered with No. 7 Township Fire-Rescue for over 57 years, serving in roles including Past Chief and Treasurer. His passion for protecting and uplifting others left a lasting impact on the fire service community throughout Eastern North Carolina. In addition to his local fire service work, Ed held leadership positions in several regional organizations. He served on the Board of Directors for the Eastern Carolina Firefighters Association, was Treasurer of the Craven County Fireman's Association, and Chairperson of the Craven County Benevolent Brotherhood. In each role, he championed firefighter safety, wellness, and community support, earning the respect and admiration of his peers for his integrity, humility, and wisdom. Ed was also a proud and active member of Grantham Lodge #725 A.F. & A.M., where he built strong bonds of fellowship and service. Known for his dry wit, generous spirit, and deep devotion to those around him, Ed found joy in the simple pleasures of life—antiquing, traveling the Eastern Seaboard, and visiting as many lighthouses as possible. He stayed young at heart by exploring new places, laughing often, and cherishing quiet moments with his beloved family, especially his nieces and nephews. He was a loving husband and father, deeply proud of his family and the life they built together. Ed’s life was a testament to service, loyalty, and love—rooted in his devotion to his community, his chosen professions, and the people closest to him. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Victoria (Daniel); and his beloved cats, Sailor and Simon. He also shared a bond like no other with Chad Smith and Danny Hill, whom he loved and thought of as sons. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Lorraine Weigl, and his parents-in-law, John and Gwen Christie. A visitation will be held at the Havelock Tourist & Event Center on Friday, May 16, 2025 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the same location with Firefighter Honors, Law Enforcement Honors, and Masonic Rites. Following the service, the family will welcome friends at the No. 7 Township Fire-Rescue. He will be laid to rest at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. Ed’s legacy of public service, love for his community, and unwavering dedication to his family will live on in the lives of those he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
