Happy Earl Smith

–

Rogersville, Tennessee

Dr. Happy Earl Smith, affectionately known simply as “Happy,” passed away on September 1, 2026, at the age of 79. A physician, Army veteran, pilot, aircraft mechanic, and lifelong student of the world around him, he lived a life that was anything but ordinary.

Happy was the son of Earl A. “Big Happy” Smith and Frances Smallwood Smith and the brother of Julietta “Judy” Smith Pearson. He was born in New Bern, North Carolina on September 24, 1946 and also lived in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Albany, Georgia. His family returned to New Bern, where he attended New Bern High School. During his junior year, the family moved to Reynolds, Georgia. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1965.

During high school Happy played trumpet, basketball and starred in track.

After high school, Happy attended Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia. He later attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, where he was a charter member of the Eta Theta Chapter of Sigma Chi fraternity and maintained lifelong friendships with his fraternity brothers.

During the Vietnam era, Happy was drafted into the United States Army. He trained as a medical paratrooper and, due to an injury, served as a medic at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. Happy ultimately chose medicine as his profession. He studied medicine in the Dominican Republic, earning his medical degree in 1981. His years there also contributed to his ability to speak Spanish, a skill he carried throughout his medical career.

Returning to the United States, Happy continued his medical training in northeast Tennessee, including family medicine training through East Tennessee State University in Johnson City and Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. He became licensed to practice medicine in Virginia in 1985 and went on to spend nearly four decades caring for patients.

Much of Happy’s earlier medical career was centered around Norton and southwest Virginia, where he practiced family and emergency medicine. The highlight of his career was working with the colleagues he loved in the emergency room of a small Catholic hospital called St. Mary’s Hospital.

At a time when most doctors retire, Happy found another calling as a physician for the Virginia Department of Corrections. He continued practicing medicine at various prisons until his passing.

Medicine, however, was only one part of Happy. He had a fascination with airplanes and machinery. He became a licensed private pilot and held FAA mechanic ratings in both Airframe and Powerplant. Happy adored his farm and his community of friends in Rogersville, Tennessee. His property was a labor of love and became a reflection of the many interests accumulated over a long and unconventional life.

Through all those chapters, he remained “Happy,” a name inherited from his father that became
unmistakably his own.

He is survived by his sister, Judy Smith Pearson (Guy); his niece, Leigh Margaret Martin (Jason); his nephew, Hart Pearson (Lauren); his great-nieces and great-nephews, Lilly Martin, McCall Martin, Jack Martin, Trip Pearson, and Anna Noelle Pearson; and his longtime love, Lois “Jib” Spears.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders in Happy’s memory.
