Dobert Owsley

–

New Bern, North Carolina

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dobert T. Owsley, who left us peacefully on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the age of 80 years, surrounded by his loving family. Affectionately known as “Grampy” by his grandchildren, Dobert was born on April 23, 1944, in Pekin, Indiana to the late Wendell S. Owsley and Carrie E. Temple.
A service to remember and celebrate Dobert’s remarkable life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2025, at the Lakeside Chapel at Greenleaf Memorial Park, 900 River Road, New Bern, followed by a reception.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 51 years, M. Susan, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and happiness, raising their children in a home filled with warmth and love. His legacy of love continues through his children, Amy Owsley and husband Ryan (New Bern, NC), Joseph Owsley Sr. and wife Kellie (Chesapeake, VA), Robert Owsley (Cove City, NC), Linda Hartzell (Texas) and Janet Bishop (Texas). He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Meghan, Joseph Jr., Logan, Liam, Finley, Connor, and Riley; Britney, Tyler, Danny, and Jacob; as well as numerous well-loved extended family members and friends. Dobert was preceded in death by his two brothers, Daniel and Dean, with whom he shared deep respect, friendship, and many storied adventures.
Dobert’s life was defined by his unwavering love for his family, his deep wisdom, and his strong moral compass, all of which touched the lives of everyone who knew him. He dedicated much of his life to serving others, and his legacy of selflessness and compassion will continue to resonate in the hearts of all those who were fortunate to have known him.
Family was always at the heart of Dobert’s world. He cherished his loved ones deeply, and his greatest joy came from seeing his children and grandchildren grow, learn, and thrive. His legacy is not only reflected in his service to his country and community, but also in the values of kindness, hard work, and integrity that he passed down to his children.
A proud Vietnam War veteran, Dobert served honorably in the military for nearly 20 years. He was a Bronze Star recipient, and his commitment to his fellow veterans was a cornerstone of his life. He was a recent Chapter president of the Vietnam Veterans Association, and his leadership and dedication have made a lasting impact on his community.
Dobert was also a gifted craftsman, pursuing his passion for woodworking and repair in his post-retirement years. After moving to New Bern, he founded Two Rivers Construction, specializing in finish carpentry, and later started New Bern Clock Works, a small business focused on clock repair and restoration. One of his most notable achievements was organizing a volunteer team to refurbish the Seth Thomas Tower Clock at New Bern's City Hall—a project that beautifully demonstrated his commitment to his community and is proudly displayed at the Tryon Palace in New Bern, North Carolina.
Beyond his professional and military contributions, Dobert was deeply involved in the veteran community and worked tirelessly to create the Field of Flags program at Union Point Park for Veterans Day. His efforts helped establish a lasting partnership between the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 886, Craven Community College, and the Student Veterans Association.
In addition to his service to veterans, Dobert dedicated much of his time to youth development. He was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), and was proud to serve on the Board of Review for Eagle Scouts in New Bern. He had a passion for scouting and took great pride in helping to shape future leaders through his guidance and support.
Dobert also attended Indiana University, first studying music and then transitioning to business, where he laid the foundation for his future successes.
Though Dobert is no longer with us, his love, dedication, and unwavering commitment to others will forever remain in our hearts. His life was a testament to service, kindness, and passion—values that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
