New Bern, North Carolina
In the heart of New Bern, North Carolina, where flowers bloom brighter and the southern gospel music echoes a little sweeter, Barbara Matthews Edwards, a cherished beacon of love, faith, and strength, entered into the glory of her eternal life on January 21, 2026. Born on July 25, 1942 in Harnett County, NC to Leroy and Mary Lee Matthews, Barbara brought warmth and joy to the world around her, living out her faith with unwavering devotion. As Proverbs 31:25-26 says, "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue." Barbara exemplified these verses through her loving nature, steadfast support, and thoughtful actions.
Although Barbara had worked outside the home in earlier years, her true calling was being a homemaker. She found great joy in creating a loving and welcoming home for her family. She was renowned for her delicious meals, especially her chocolate pie and meatloaf, dishes that will forever hold a special place in the hearts of her family. Barbara's green thumb was evident in the beautiful flowers she cultivated in her yard, a testament to her nurturing spirit. Spending time with her family brought her great joy and especially watching her grandchildren play sports. Barbara also loved the water and cherished time spent at the beach, where she felt closest to God’s creation and at ease.
Barbara was a long-time member of Edward Christian Church, and her faith was her guiding light, a beacon she carried with her when she moved to New Bern in her retirement years. Barbara's vibrant personality, bubbly laughter, and candid conversations brought joy to all who were fortunate to cross her path.
Beyond her many accomplishments, what mattered most to Barbara was her family and her faith. She radiated love and support through her actions and words, creating an environment where everyone felt cherished. Known for her unwavering faith and thoughtful nature, Barbara was a cornerstone in her community and will be profoundly missed.
Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Framan Edwards; children, Annette Squires, Michael Sartin and wife Tiffany, and Ginger Poole and husband Keith; stepson, Lance Edwards and wife Tammy; sisters, Patty Gardner and Sara Jo Womack; grandchildren, Adam (Macy), Faith (Gavin), Joshua, Caleb (Italia), Bryce, Isaac, Carson (Alonha) and Laney; and great grandchildren, Mercy and Grady.
